Socitm launches digital trends 2024

Digital and technology trends 2024

Socitm is delighted to launch its public sector digital trends 2024 report.

Set in a perfect storm of rapidly advancing new technologies and increasing public expectations, the report examines a fundamental shift needed for local government and the wider sector.

In preparing this seventh annual report, author and Socitm associate director Jos Creese, in collaboration with the Linked Organisation of Local Authority IT Associations (LOLA) and Major Cities of Europe (MCE), draws on wide-reaching research and impact cases from practitioners across the UK and around the world.

Despite extreme pressures on public sector finances and staffing, the report provides evidence on how services must primarily become digital in everything they do:

  • AI will start to underpin re-imagined services and revolutionary data use.
  • Services will join in new ways in connected places, enhancing, not necessarily replacing face-to-face delivery.

“We are delighted to officially launch this report today. It’s a fantastic piece of research, which I know will help invigorate and support the critical digital transformation needed in the sector. There are so many hard-working individuals working tirelessly for their communities in the most challenging environment we have ever experienced but they need help.

“I encourage everyone in our sector to use this resource as a practical way to do just that. Be inspired through the impact cases documented here to turbo boost your innovation and modernisation agendas.

Socitm President Mark Lumley
Director of ICT and Digital at London Borough of Hounslow

“In the UK, in particular, the sector is in crisis. Unlike the political choices in the ‘austerity years’, the on-going financial hardship local authorities face while trying to transform digital delivery means a radically different approach is needed. The courage from political and executive leadership to take advantage of the new technological possibilities is essential if councils are to provide the services which improve people’s lives. This will only be realised if there is creativity, collaboration and vision across organisations and places which we cover in some detail throughout this report. Happy reading!”
