What is Place Insight?

Place Insight is a revolutionary tool that combines diverse data sources into a single, simple to use platform.

Designed with input from across the public sector, Place Insight features a comprehensive Social Progress Index (SPI) at English local authority level, covering all 294 councils.

The user is given actionable insights about people and places to support compelling storytelling with data and enable effective resource allocation. It will also assist in building community-based research capacity.

Key features

  • Explore metrics on well-being, opportunity, and basic human needs — the fundamentals of the SPI — tailored to help you identify areas for improvement in your locality and measure community resilience.
  • Access 56 datasets per authority in a multi-layered view, providing a holistic understanding of social progress.
  • Compare detailed datasets covering key aspects of social progress across various local authorities to understand how your community measures up against similar-sized areas.
  • Curated and analysed over a three-year period, with data tracking long-term trends. A fourth year will be added in early 2025.
  • Updated annually to ensure you always have the latest insights at your fingertips.

Additional databank

Take the opportunity to access publicly available data on the local economy, public health, the latest Census data, and other spatial data sources.

Pre-built analysis and functionality

  • Benchmark population outcomes across local authority areas, regions, and individual indicators.
  • Utilise pre-built charts and analyses to explore the relationships between various indicators.
  • Conduct economic analysis to inform your decision-making.
