Cost of Living Data Explorer – Barnet Council

Barnet Council developed a Cost of Living Data Explorer, an innovative tool that combines various data sources to provide insights into the impact of the cost of living crisis on residents. This project aimed to enhance the council’s ability to target support and interventions effectively.

Challenges

Integrating diverse data sources into a single platform was key to the project’s success, alongside ensuring data privacy and security. The main challenge was making complex data accessible for non-technical users. Keeping the tool updated with the latest data was also essential for accuracy and relevance.

Approach

The project used Microsoft Power BI for data visualisation and analysis to address these questions:

  • How much has the cost of living risen in Barnet, particularly in specific areas?
  • Are incomes rising to match this increase?
  • What are the impacts of these changes on different groups of residents?

The project combined multiple data sources, including internal council data and external datasets, developed interactive maps and dashboards, implemented data privacy measures by aggregating data at LSOA level, and collaborated with LOTI to share insights and best practices.

Outcomes and benefits

The project created an easy-to-use, dynamic dashboard that stays current. It features 21 topics under three themes: cost, income, and impact. Metadata and methodology pages enhance transparency of data sources and calculations.

Dashboard benefits:

• Better understanding of local needs
• Improved targeting of support services
• Facilitated data-driven decision-making
• Increased transparency and accessibility of data
• Potential cost savings through efficient resource allocation
