The concept of ‘smart cities’ has become a common term over the past 15 years. However, the phrase itself is laden with a vision of a dystopian future: – of obtrusive surveillance, of human vs machine and of deploying technology for its own sake. In this session, we look at how the concept of the ‘smart city’ has evolved over time and in the context of net zero implications for energy, built environment and transport domains. Discussing whether sustainability could be the ‘why’ that the digitally enabled city has been waiting for. Are ‘smart cities’ indeed the route to a sustainable economic future?
