LGR review: the work already undertaken still matters

A joint statement from Chief Executive Nadira Hussain and President Yogita Popat

You will no doubt have seen the latest uncertainty around the timetable for local government reorganisation.

We know this will be frustrating for many councils, especially given the significant time, energy and resource already invested in preparing for change.

It is understandable that colleagues will now be asking what this means in practice, what happens next, and how best to sustain momentum while the position becomes clearer.

For digital, data and technology leaders, our message is simple: the work already undertaken still matters

Across the country, councils have used the prospect of reorganisation to take a closer look at their systems, data, contracts, governance, partnerships and service models.

That work has helped build stronger relationships, improve understanding of current operating environments and identify opportunities to deliver better, more sustainable public services.

Whatever happens next, those foundations remain valuable

Socitm will continue to stand alongside members through this period of uncertainty.

  • We will keep creating space for practitioners to share learning, test thinking with peers and focus on the practical steps that remain within councils’ control.
  • We will continue to reflect members’ experiences and concerns in our conversations with government and wider sector partners.

We would welcome hearing from you about the issues, risks and opportunities you want us to raise as discussions continue.

Please do share your views with us so that we can ensure the voice of digital, data and technology leaders is clearly heard.

In the meantime, we encourage members not to lose sight of the progress already made

Whether change comes through formal reorganisation, devolution, shared services or wider transformation programmes, the need for strong digital leadership and better, more resilient public services remains unchanged.

Nadira Hussain (Chief Executive) and Yogita Popat (President)
