In Our View: Issue 10 focuses on data security, an area where local government is second only to the NHS – in making errors. The Information Commissioner’s Office, Socitm and GOV.UK Verify, which has just announced two trials with local authorities, comment on their work helping councils improve their performance.
The issue also looks at how two of Canada’s local authorities, which have a high degree of devolution, have dealt with austerity – including City of Windsor CIO Harry Turnbull, a speaker at the Socitm Annual 2016 conference. Nicola Graham, head of ICT for Aberdeenshire Council and chair of Socitm in Scotland, discusses her work in advance of the Scottish annual conference on 3 November.
The news section covers Brexit’s impact on broadband roll-out, councils in Scotland and London choosing shared IT heads, union complaints about outsourcing at Scottish Borders Council and Salford and Liverpool’s collaboration on extending their use of SAP. It also includes an interview with Milton Keynes Council, the location of this year’s conference, on its innovative smart city work.
