Spread the love

Hold on to your hats, the North – Socitm is coming to town!

After probing our members in those verdant, industrious lands beyond Birmingham, we unearthed the following: you wanted an event for ICT sector professionals packed with top speakers and sessions analysing the pioneering technologies at the forefront of the UK’s public sector.

This will be our first (of many!) northern conferences – but, you cry, when is it? Where is it? Tell us!

Ok, ok. It’ll be held on 9 November (so you’ve got eight days to get yourself registered) at Leeds’ Cloth Hall Court, which sounds like a pleasant place.

Oh, and this is quite important: it’s free to Socitm North East, North West and Yorkshire and Humber members, so there’s little reason not to come if you’re one of those.

Our members’ feedback has allowed us to tailor the event to be of particular relevance to CEOs, CIOs, IT heads, other decision-makers, and theoretical physicists (ok, I made the last one up, but they’re still welcome to come along).

So, what’s planned? Who’s there? What time’s lunch?

The event will begin with the eminent Phil Jackman, Director at Guerrilla Working and former Director of IT at Durham County Council, who’ll be looking at commercialisation and if it can generate revenue for councils. (Phil uses a motif of Che Guevara in his marketing, but don’t worry: he’s assured us he won’t try to convert you to communism.)

And there’s so much more. Stephen Blackburn, Senior Information Governance Officer at Leeds City Council and Leeds Data Mill Lead, will explore the challenges organisations face in publishing open data; while Yunus Mayat, Enterprise Architect at City of Bradford Council, will examine the city’s work on Internet of Things technology and how it has changed the way the council thinks about providing services.

Chris Cooper, Director of KnowNow Information, will look at why our use of technology and data is missing a trick – and explain how a new service called Consentua can help to fix this.

Kurt Hagerman, CISO, Armor, will discuss the reasons why the security community is suffering from Shiny Object Syndrome (SOS) and run through the processes that are your best bet for staying safe in any environment.

Mark Harrison, Senior Product Owner at Digital Cabinet Office, will explain how GovWifi, developed by GDS, is working across the public sector, and how your local authority can participate.

Mike Zammit, former CIO of Wirral MBC, will invite delegates to discuss how ready they are for the GDPR and share lessons learned.

I don’t actually know what time lunch is. 12.30? That sounds reasonable.

See you there!
