By Nadira Hussain, Socitm Immediate Past President

So, although it’s been a good few weeks since the Socitm WIT Symposium and Annual Conference (of which the Awards presentation was a part of) on 17th October, I’ve been meaning to find some time to share my views about these events!

The Socitm initiative has been running for nearly two years — we’ve made some good engagement from both members, ‘Empowering Women in the Digital World’ (EWDW) participants, private sector partners and more widely. Planned meetings to enable colleagues to come together to discuss ‘hot topics’, to share experiences and network is working really well. The symposium did exactly that — an opportunity to take part in an event that provided an inspirational talk from our keynote speaker Debbie Green, Head of Public Sector sales, Oracle, fascinating presentations from Gartner, Alpine and Adapt2digital. Feedback from three of the most recent EWDW graduates, who described the outstanding growth in confidence and positivity they had achieved whilst undertaking the leadership programme.

The event engendered great conversation; genuine questions, observations and exchange about common issues. There was lots of positive energy, engagement and it was certainly buzzing! It’s absolutely obvious that women find this type of a networking event invaluable, especially where the group share and experience the same issues.

It would be great to have you involved in future events and for you to get in touch with details of the content that you would like to see incorporated. I’m keen to understand what interests, motivates and frustrates you, how we can shape our events to address these issues. Please keep the dialogue going!

For the first time this year, we organised the presentation of two key awards, The Peacock and Rising Stars. These were presented at the evening presentation awards which is held after the Annual Conference.

The first award was in recognition of an established woman leader in the sector, who has been acting as a proactive role model and distinguished leader. The second, a young entrant who is enthusiastic and already starting to make a difference to her workplace and environment. We received a number of interesting and thought-provoking nominations and selected the following winners:

Peacock award – Sally Watkins (Wokingham Borough Council)
Rising Stars award – Beth Meredith (Cheshire West and Chester Council). Both have shared some great feedback about receiving the awards.

It was a privilege to have Dr Sue Black with us to present the awards to the winners. She was as inspirational as ever; sharing her journey of saving Bletchley Park – commitment and perseverance to deliver outcomes….

It was high time that we in Socitm, recognise the efforts and conviction of our women colleagues, and celebrate the success that we are achieving. I’d very much like you to take some time to consider who you may want to nominate next year and plan to make a submission in due course – we will keep you posted as to when the process opens again.

In the meantime, I would encourage your input so that we can continue to work together to build on the momentum we’re creating and attract more women to the society and the sector. I really want to hear from you; come and join us.
