Socitm Director of Policy and Research, Martin Ferguson, has been invited to speak at this year’s Peter Drucker Forum, at Vienna’s Imperial Palace, on Friday 22 November 2019.
Now in its 11th year, the forum is a highly prestigious global event dedicated to the management philosophy of Peter Drucker. Born in Vienna in 1909, Drucker was an internationally respected management professor, writer and consultant. The forum takes place annually in his home city and is attended by delegates from around the world.
This focus of this year’s forum is Power of ecosystems: managing in a networked world. Martin will be joined by Cécile Maisonneuve President, Fabrique de la Cité, and Thomas Madreiter Director of Planning, City of Vienna, to talk about Cities as social ecologies. Specifically, his presentation will explore how a new wave of people and place-based public policy responses is emerging to address the persistent social and economic problems facing cities.
Using practical examples drawn from the United Kingdom, Martin will examine the conditions generating these responses, the nature of the social ecosystems being cultivated, the styles of leadership and governance models being deployed, the enabling skills and capabilities required and the underpinning infrastructures, platforms, data and technologies being harnessed through their creation.
Socitm’s presence at the Peter Drucker Forum 2019, further underlines the society’s commitment to working collaboratively with international agencies to improve outcomes for citizens. As Ferguson explains, such occasions present a unique opportunity to interact and exchange with other European municipalities in a non-commercial environment. For example, Socitm is working with ALGIM, and its LOLA and MCE partner organisations across the world to produce guidance for local public service digital leaders about which technologies are most likely to become mainstream in the practical applications to public services design and transformation.
“Forums such as this enable us to discuss the real challenges municipalities face. They increase our understanding of how to involve citizens in designing better services that improve lives. We hear the truth, not the spin. This ensures our members benefit from global insight and best practice, helping the UK remain at the fore in promoting innovation and leading positive change,” he said.
