Socitm, the professional network for leaders engaged in the innovation and modernisation of public services, has been shortlisted for the 2020 Women in IT Awards, London.

The society has made an entry in the Diversity initiative of the year category featuring their Empowering Women (EW) programme and are among the final few considered for the accolade.

The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony at the Grand ball room, Grosvenor House, London, on 29th January 2020. The Women in IT Awards series aims to tackle the issue of diversity and aims to redress the gender imbalance by showcasing the achievements of women in the sector and identifying new role models.

One of Socitm’s key policy themes is Leadership, diversity and skills. Under this umbrella, Socitm works tirelessly to address gender inequality in digital roles within the public sector.

In 2019, Socitm launched its ground-breaking Empowering women (EW) programme. Delivered by the Socitm Leadership Academy, in partnership with QA Training, Empowering women has been designed to enable participants to develop and exercise their leadership potential with confidence and free from gendered criticism. To date, more than 100 women have graduated from the EW programme and feedback from alumni has been overwhelmingly and universally positive. Described by cohorts as ‘empowering’ and even ‘life changing’, EW is part of a strategic drive to promote diversity and inclusion in the public sector as a whole. The programme is supported in this endeavour by Socitm’s Women in ICT initiative, the development of a new mentoring scheme, extending the opportunity and experiences to schools and consideration of other initiatives to extend our reach.

Socitm director of leadership development and research, Nadira Hussain, said: “We are thrilled to be recognised as a pivotal and influential organisation in the battle for gender equality within ICT and the public sector more widely.

“It’s never been more important to attract, retain and develop people with passion, commitment, foresight. Through their vision, we can transform public services and deliver robust, customer-centric place-based outcomes for the communities we serve. Our Leadership Academy EW programme is a powerful means of achieving this. Public sector leaders need to reflect the demographic make-up of the communities they serve. Therefore, women need the freedom and confidence to develop and utilise their talents and abilities impactfully. Without this, services that improve outcomes for people holistically cannot be delivered.”
